Diagnosis and Treatment
Faithful is the whining of our children when they are discomforted, but our trees are not always as forthright in expressing their dis-ease. A disease is any deviation from the norm; whether caused by a depletion, dysfunction or disruption.
Successful treatment depends upon correct diagnosis. Treatment based upon incorrect or no diagnosis may make matters worse. What is considered normal for one species, may be life-threatening to another.
Diseased trees often send up red flags. But symptoms may only point to secondary problems, while the primary issue goes undetected. Predisposed trees get picked on by everybody. Spraying bugs with a pesticide may send them packing, but if the real issue is not addressed, they’ll be back with their peskier cousins.
Most problems can easily be corrected by the owner or manager through cultural changes. Be wary of tree care companies that offer expensive treatments before getting to the underlying issue.
